Human Rights and Peace Advocacy

Amidst intensifying internal conflict in the province in 2006, ATFI related with the Philippine Office for Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process to advocate for the cessation of hostilities and instead focus on resolving the roots of conflict which is basically poverty and socio-economic underdevelopment. Under its call for “Development for Peace” and the women farmers’ conference “Farming Without Fear,” ATFI invoked the International Humanitarian Law that upholds the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in situations of armed conflict to protect the lives of innocent civilians mostly farmers and their women. ATFI then found support from the Ambassador of the EU Delegation and the Norwegian Facilitator of the NDF-GRP Peace Negotiations. Today these calls remain relevant and ATFI continues to assert its development work towards attaining peace in Negros rural communities.
